Which Claim Is Yours?
Answer first: the scheme depends on how the injury happened, not on where you live or work now.
| How it happened | Scheme | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Injured at work in NSW | NSW workers compensation (WorkCover) | Notify your employer, see your GP |
| Car, motorbike, truck, bus or pedestrian accident in NSW | NSW CTP (green slip) scheme | Report to police, notify the CTP insurer |
| Veteran with accepted service-related health needs | Department of Veterans' Affairs | See your GP for a DVA referral |
What Kind of Injuries Actually Drive Work Claims?
Body stressing is the single largest cause of serious workers compensation claims in Australia, and it is the category physiotherapy and exercise physiology exist to treat.
Safe Work Australia’s Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia 2025 reports approximately 146,700 serious workers compensation claims, of which body stressing accounts for around 50,600 claims, or 34.5 percent. The median time lost across all serious claims is 7.4 working weeks.
Mechanisms of Serious Workers' Compensation Claims
WorkCover Physiotherapy and WorkCover Exercise Physiology (NSW Workers Compensation).
Who is covered
Workers injured in the course of employment in NSW. Your employer's insurer funds reasonable and necessary treatment under the scheme.
How treatment approval works
Physiotherapists and accredited Exercise Physiologists must be approved by SIRA to treat in the NSW scheme. iRehab's Exercise Physiologists hold the ESSA accreditation that SIRA requires. Your treatment is tracked through Allied Health Recovery Requests, and we manage those forms with your insurer.
Referral rules
Physiotherapists can begin treatment without a referral. Exercise Physiologists require a referral from your nominated treating doctor before WorkCover exercise physiology sessions begin. If you do not have one yet, we will tell you exactly what to ask your GP for.
The goal: safe return to work
Programs follow the nationally endorsed Clinical Framework: measured goals, functional progress and communication with your employer and insurer about duties and capacity.
CTP Motor Accident Physiotherapy
Who is covered
People injured in motor accidents in NSW, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, under the CTP (green slip) scheme regulated by SIRA.
Early treatment in the first 28 days
You can access limited treatment before a claim is lodged: typically one GP consultation and two treatment consultations such as physiotherapy, with the insurer's approval, within the first 28 days after the accident. Beyond that, a claim for statutory benefits must be lodged.
Claim time limits that matter
Lodging within 28 days of the accident preserves entitlement to weekly payments from the day after the accident. Claims can be lodged up to three months, but late claims may lose back-pay. Statutory benefits include treatment and care for at least the first 52 weeks under the current scheme.
What iRehab provides
Physiotherapy and exercise physiology for whiplash, soft tissue injuries, fractures and post-hospital recovery after motor accidents, with reporting to the insurer as required.
DVA Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology for Veterans.
Who is covered
Eligible DVA Veteran Card holders can access physiotherapy and exercise physiology through DVA. A valid referral is required for DVA-funded allied health treatment.
DVA treatment cycle
For most DVA clients, a referral covers up to 12 sessions or one year, whichever comes first. If further treatment is clinically necessary, the client can receive another treatment cycle following a new referral from their usual GP. TPI Gold Card holders are exempt from the treatment cycle for physiotherapy and exercise physiology.
Gold Card and White Card rules
DVA Gold Card and White Card holders may be eligible for physiotherapy and exercise physiology under their DVA entitlements. White Card treatment applies to conditions accepted by DVA. Treatment must be clinically necessary and provided under the applicable DVA referral requirements.
What iRehab provides
iRehab provides physiotherapy and exercise physiology for eligible DVA clients, with treatment tailored to their condition, goals and functional needs. Our team provides treatment in line with DVA referral and funding requirements.

What Makes iRehab Different on Insurance Claims
- Both professions in the scheme. Physiotherapy and ESSA accredited Exercise Physiologists, which matters because many recovery plans need both: acute treatment first, graded conditioning after.
- Paperwork handled. Recovery requests, insurer reports and DVA care plans written by the treating team, not left to you.
- Clinic, home or workplace. Treatment continues through mobile rehab when you cannot attend the clinic.
- Communication with your GP. Written reports at the points each scheme requires, so your referral pathway never stalls.
How a Claim-Based Physio Program Starts
- Call with your claim details. Claim number, insurer or DVA card type, and your GP’s details.
- Verification. We confirm approvals and any referral requirement before your first session.
- Assessment and baseline. Full assessment plus functional goals agreed in writing.
- Treatment and reporting. Sessions in clinic, at home or at work, with reports to your doctor and the payer at the scheme’s required points.
What Do You Need to Bring, Depending on Your Scheme?
| Your scheme | Bring to the first appointment |
|---|---|
| NSW workers compensation | Claim number, insurer name, your employer's details, and your nominated treating doctor's name. A referral is needed only for Exercise Physiologist sessions. |
| CTP motor accident | Claim or notification number, the CTP insurer's details, and the police event number if you have one. |
| DVA | Your Gold or White Card, and the GP, specialist or hospital doctor referral. |
How Long Does a Return-to-Work Program Take?
Assessment and baseline. Function measured against the physical demands of your actual job, not a generic standard. Goals written down. This is what every later report is measured against.
Early treatment. Settling symptoms and restoring basic movement. For most claims this phase is the most frequent, and it is where the scheme expects clear progress.
Graded activity and suitable duties. Rebuilding capacity while returning to work in some form where that is possible. Evidence in workers compensation consistently favours staying connected to work over waiting until full recovery, which is why the Clinical Framework the NSW scheme uses is built around function rather than pain alone.
Capacity and discharge. Progress reviewed against the baseline, with a recommendation on duties and hours communicated to your employer and insurer.
If recovery stalls. Some claims do not follow the expected path. When that happens the treating team says so in the reporting rather than continuing an ineffective program, and the conversation moves to what else is needed. That is better for you than a program that quietly runs on.
For Employers, Insurers, Case Managers and Nominated Treating Doctors
Nominated treating doctors. Referrals accepted for physiotherapy and, where required, Exercise Physiologist treatment under the NSW workers compensation scheme. Reporting comes back at the points the scheme requires rather than on request.
Insurers and case managers. Allied Health Recovery Requests, progress reporting and functional capacity information are prepared by the treating practitioner. Where a request for further treatment is declined, we advise the worker the same day and set out the options rather than leaving it unexplained.
Employers and return-to-work coordinators. Communication about duties, hours and capacity, and treatment delivered at the workplace where that suits the program.
DVA referrers. Patient care plans written at the start of a treatment cycle and reporting back to the referring GP at the end, per the allied health treatment cycle.
