Post-Surgical Rehab

Physiotherapy

Strengthening programs to restore function after surgery.

Recovery starts the moment surgery ends

The rehabilitation you do after an operation can be the difference between a full recovery and a limitation you live with. Our Physiotherapists provide hands on care and guided exercise through the critical weeks and months, working inside your surgeon’s protocols while adjusting each session to how your body is responding.

The early and middle phases

Physio led rehab covers the first stretch of recovery. We manage pain and swelling, restore range of motion, improve mobility and gait, and progressively strengthen the affected area. Treatment includes gentle manual therapy for stiffness and scar tissue restrictions, exercises to reactivate the muscles around the surgical site, and clear guidance on what you can and cannot safely do at each stage.

From your surgeon's clearance onwards

Your first appointment usually falls within days to weeks of surgery, once your surgeon has cleared you. We assess the wound, swelling, range of motion and pain levels, then begin gently. Appointments run 30 to 45 minutes, once or twice a week. As you progress we liaise with your surgeon, and at the right moment we hand you over to our Exercise Physiology team.

Surgeries we commonly treat

We provide physio rehab after joint replacements (hip, knee, shoulder), ACL and other ligament reconstructions, rotator cuff and shoulder repairs, spinal surgery, fracture management (surgical and non surgical), and any procedure where post operative stiffness or scar tissue is a concern.

Common Questions

Yes. Early mobilisation under physio guidance helps manage pain after surgery.

Recovery is rarely a straight line. We monitor your progress against expected milestones and adjust the program as needed. If there are concerns, we speak to your surgeon directly.

Handing over to Exercise Physiology

Once you are past the early and middle phases, our Exercise Physiology team takes on the strength and conditioning work. Hydrotherapy is useful in the early stages while weight bearing is restricted.
